Guide follow-up questions

Tell Lemma what to listen for so it can ask better follow-up questions.

Follow-up guidance tells Lemma what kind of depth matters.

This is the main difference between Lemma and a static form. A static form captures the first answer. Lemma should get the reason, example, objection, tradeoff, emotion, and next step behind it.

Start with what you want to uncover

Write a short list of details that would make the response more useful.

For customer feedback:

  • the task the customer was trying to complete
  • where the experience broke down
  • what they expected instead
  • how often the issue happens
  • what they would fix first

For lead qualification:

  • current workflow
  • urgency
  • problem severity
  • buying context
  • objections
  • next step

For churn:

  • trigger moment
  • failed workaround
  • product, pricing, support, timing, or fit
  • what would have changed the decision
  • whether the customer might return

Use specific follow-up targets

Weak:

Ask good follow-up questions.

Better:

Follow up when the participant mentions pricing, onboarding delays, manual workarounds, missing integrations, stakeholder objections, or switching to another tool.

Example guidance for churn

If the participant says pricing was the reason, ask what changed in perceived value before price became a problem. If they mention a missing feature, ask when that missing feature first blocked their workflow and what workaround they tried.

Match depth to the study

If the study is a Quick pulse, keep the guidance narrow. If the study is a Deep dive, include more follow-up targets and examples.
